'The Way I See Things, Sin Discuplas'

My upcoming installation, 'The Way I See Things, Sin Disculpas', is scheduled to open on Saturday June 11th, as part of the 'Art in the Park' event at Ft Casey State Park bunkers, just inside the Kingsbury entrance to the right of the mound in Coupeville, WA on Whidbey Island. The event will be open from 11-4, that day, and then the installation will begin int's journey to Zürich, Switzerland to be shown again at the Atelier Sonnegg.

Artist Statement:

If asked I would say that my religion consists of fortune cookies, nature and numbers, which often elicits a good chuckle from whomever I am having the conversation with. It's just that I'm not kidding around, but there is more to it than that.

I have many memories, both good and not so terrific, regarding my earlier life, growing up Christian. There were times when I felt so scared of failure in different ways or fearful of particular life scenarios, but that fear had an opposite effect in terms of my actions and reactions than what I imagine would be anticipated, and many times they manifested in self-destructive outcomes.

In 2006, in my 30's, I took my 'first steps' practicing spirituality in a manner which felt most natural to me, though I had earlier on began to assimilate elements into my practice as far back as 1988.

It was important to me to build my own spiritual foundation, even earlier on, though I had almost willingly tethered myself to a impossibly heavy weight consisting largely of the opinions of others and the guilt I felt about being human.  Reflection has been a beautiful companion, and healing has come with time and patience, as has a refreshed look at problem areas that has inspired me to celebrate this journey in art.

This installation is a nod to the collection of influences and experiences that, in a cumulative way, formed the spiritual identity I live by, fortune cookies and all.
